It feels like the EU and the UK are in a pre-match phase. We all know Brexit is coming, yet we are still members, continue to pay into the budget and MEPs still have a lot of committee work to do. You might think, what’s the point still being there? Well, the issues we are debating today may become law in the UK before we leave and will influence EU rules for years to come. It is in all our interests to ensure that the European Union makes the right laws not just for us, but for the people living in all member states.

In my article in Conservative Home, I explain why we need an EU that works for both sides and why it is important that UK MEPs continue to be involved in policy decisions.

I also discuss about my thoughts on Michael Barnier, the European Commission’s negotiator on Brexit. I have found him a reasonable person and look forward to working with him towards a smooth exit for the UK. Also covered is the elections for President of the European Parliament. The ECR have nominated Helga Stevens from our Flemish NVA party and you can read the reasons why in the article.

There is a lot of debate about the triggering of Article 50 and the process of leaving the EU, but since the British people voted to leave the EU we need to respect the result of the referendum.  Brexit means Brexit.
