Tech is really important for our economy now and it will be increasingly in the future.
That is why I like to support London’s fantastic tech community and the people in it.
We often talk about companies such as Facebook and Google but the people who made these giants had to start somewhere. All of them had a time in their life when they wrote their first ever line of code.
Today we need more coders, we need more people in tech.
We are teaching them in schools as fast as we can but the tech economy is growing so fast we need to get more coders trained up fast. This demand by firms for more talent is one of the main reasons why so-called ‘Coding Bootcamps’ have appeared. These organisations take non-coders and turn them into developers in a few weeks.
One such organisation, who I have visited before, is Makers Academy.
They invited me to come along to one of their graduation nights where the current crop of students show off their final project to a packed room of people.
I was also asked to say a few words too. In my little speech I pointed out how important they were to our economy and that they should take what they have learnt there and spread the enthusiasm for tech all across London and across the country. You can watch my full speech by clicking here.
Thank you again to Makers Academy for inviting me.
