American and UK relations covered in CITY AM

I was in the USA recently and met with numerous officials, key Republicans and their staff, and was delighted to hear that they were all keen to have a trade deal with the UK. They also wanted it to happen as soon as possible.

There is huge enthusiasm in the USA to work with the UK, not only economically but because they simply want to.

We may differ in some areas but we share so much more in common than we disagree on. When it comes to trade talks we begin from a very similar regulatory background in areas like trade, law, security, freedom and values.

What do we want from a trade deal with the USA? Well, although we are still part of the EU right now and cannot have official discussions about trade talks, we can have conversations about points of principle. There will be areas where we disagree on, for example the NHS, but there are also many more areas where we can work together. It may be that we have a staggered trade deal where we agree some areas first and then tackle more complex issues later.

I lay out my thoughts in an article for CITYAM which you can read by clicking here.
